Custom Large Size Quartz Tube / Formed Quartz Tube
In the application fields of energy and semiconductors, we will use large-sized quartz tubes (from D200mm to D500mm or more). At the same time, the quality requirements for quartz tubes are also very strict. For example, there are no bubbles, gas dots, gas lines, and smooth transparent surfaces. We generally have two common ways to produce such large-sized quartz tubes. We call them “Ordinary quartz tube” and “formed quartz tubes”. These two production methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. We will choose the best based on the customer’s usage scenario.
“Ordinary quartz tube”
This kind of quartz tube is produced by melting high-purity quartz sand in an electric furnace, and then flowing fused silica fluid naturally along the molding mouth to form a tube shape by gravity. Ordinary quartz tube is mainly used for producing small diameter quartz. With the development of technology, the diameter of ordinary quartz tube is also getting larger and larger.
Ordinary quartz tubes have these advantages. a. Large output and low cost, b. Smooth and transparent pipe walls (invisible lines to the naked eye), c. No length limit.
But there are also some drawbacks. a. The wall of thicker and larger straight drawn pipes is prone to defects such as bubbles, gas lines, and gas points. These flaws are unacceptable in the semiconductor field. b. The roundness of the tube is poor. That is to say, his outer diameter tolerance is relatively large. This is because under the action of gravity, the high-temperature pipe wall will shrink due to the influence of air pressure.
“Formed quartz tube”
Formed quartz tube, also known as secondary formed tube. The production method involves rotating the secondary forming lathe and heating the quartz tube wall with a hydrogen oxygen flame to a molten state. Enlarge the quartz tube wall through centrifugation. Adjust the diameter of the quartz tube to be processed using a graphite trowel. Then evenly move the graphite trowel to process the entire quartz tube into the required diameter. At the same time of centrifugation, the reduction amount is calculated by volume, and the feed parameters of the lathe holder are adjusted to control the diameter and wall thickness of the quartz tube. The biggest advantage of this processing is that it can process the quartz tube into a larger diameter without affecting the shape and size accuracy of the quartz tube, in order to meet the requirements of practical applications. Formed quartz tubes also have their advantages and disadvantages. Its advantages are superior quality (no bubble gas point gas line), small thickness outer diameter size tolerance, and the ability to process larger outer diameter quartz tubes (OD500~1000mm). The natural disadvantage is high cost, and larger surfaces may have slight wavy patterns (which is not acceptable in the optical field).
To sum up, the formed quartz tube is a secondary processing product of ordinary quartz tube. Its purpose is to achieve larger dimensions, better accuracy, and improve the quality of quartz tubes. Don’t worry too much about choosing which type of quartz tube to use. Make a choice based on the usage scenario. We can solve the problems of bubble gas lines and true roundness for large size ordinary quartz tube through auxiliary processing. The ultimate use of large-diameter quartz tubes is as raw material processing tubes in the semiconductor and energy fields.
